Cascadia 2024 Day 5 (belated): Strainmeter success

 By Noel Jackson

The last day of our expedition before returning to port started out busy. After our previous issues at the SOFS instruments, we returned to the SOFS location hopeful that our electronics on the REMy were all in working order. Everything looked good, except that we continued to have problems communicating with the instrument through our optical modems. After troubleshooting for a few hours, we made the decision to go ahead without working optical modem communication. This isn’t critical to the function of the instrument, but it meant we couldn’t perform certain checks we usually would, nor set the clock time on the instrument. We can work around the clock issue by having Jason give our instrument a little “love tap” which shows up on the instrument at a known time.

In the end, we got the REMy plugged in to our SOFS instrument, and the optical modem worked very briefly - enough to confirm that the SOFS instrument turned on successfully.

In the meantime I have checked our second year of SOFS data that we pulled up a few days ago. The data looks great, so that’s exciting!
