Day 6: Alaska 2024 GNSS-A Deployment - A Tribute To The Unsung Heroes Of Our Expedition

As the sun rises and sets over the endless expanse of ocean day after day, the R/V Sikuliaq remains a beacon of dedication, teamwork, and resilience. While our recent blog posts have focused on the exciting scientific mission at hand, as we approach the halfway point of our expedition, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible crew of the R/V Sikuliaq who make everything possible.

The ship's crew, including the Chief Mate, Bosun, A/Bs, and Marine Technicians on the aftdeck preparing to recover a float pack from one of our deployments. It takes a village for these operations to run safely, smoothly, and successfully.

To the Captain and Mates--the Commanders of our Voyage

At the helm of our vessel is our esteemed Captain John Hamill, whose experience and leadership guide us through unpredictable waters. Captain Hamill and his skilled Mates (Chief Mate Artie Levine, Second Mate Val Koll, and Third Mate Kalin Zlaket) direct our course with precision and confidence. Their vigilance and expertise in navigation are crucial to our mission, allowing the science crew to focus on research knowing we are in the most capable hands.

To the Chief Engineer, Assistant Engineers, and QMEDS--the Masters of the Engine Room

Our Chief Engineer, Sean Gardiner, Assistant Engineers (First A/E Shelly Song, Second A/E Dave Young, and Third A/E Noah Bytwerk), and QMEDS (Charles Reynolds, Eli Gould, and Hannah Hicks) are the backbone of the Sikuliaq's mechanical operations. Chief Gardiner ensures all systems run smoothly, from routine maintenance to emergency repairs. Alongside Chief Gardiner, the A/Es Shelly, Dave, and Noah, and QMEDs Charles and Eli, handle everything from routinely monitoring engine performance to troubleshooting unexpected mechanical issues. Their combined expertise and dedication keep the ship moving and our mission on track.

To the Bosuns and Able-Bodied Personnel--the Deck Crew Dynamos

The Bosuns (Simin Boroumand and Paul St Onge) and Able-Bodied Personnel (Ian Whittle, Joe Cop, and Jess Hettwer) are essential to the smooth operation of the Sikuliaq's deck. The Bosuns Simin and Paul lead by example, overseeing maintenance, cargo operations, and ensuring that everything on deck runs like clockwork. ABs Ian, Joe, and Jess, with their versatile skills, support these efforts by handling a wide range of tasks, from mooring to rigging. Together, they keep the ship in top shape and our missions progressing smoothly.

To the Cooks--the Masters of Maritime Meals

The Mess/Lounge is the heart of the ship, where all crew members gather three times daily to share meals, stories, and laughs. And it follows that no expedition would be complete without the culinary delights prepared by the ship's talented cooks, and the maintenance/upkeep of the Mess/Lounge. Chief Stewardess Alanna Trillingham, Cook Evan Dunaway, and Mess Attendant Tim Morrow provide us with nutritious meals to fuel our long days, but also lift our spirits with their creativity and passion for cooking. Their dedication to keeping the 37 people aboard well-fed and happy is a cornerstone of daily life on the ship.

To the Electricians--Keeping the Current Flowing

The ship's Electrician, Dan Buchsbaum, is instrumental in ensuring that all electrical systems operate smoothly throughout our expedition. With expert knowledge of marine electrical systems, Dan is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing everything from lighting and communications systems to navigation equipment, keeping our electrical infrastructure reliable during our expedition.

To the Marine Technicians--the Science Support Specialists

The Marine Technicians, Sam Richards, Sarah Gisler, and Kyle Gronewold, are the backbone of our scientific operations. They ensure that all research equipment is functioning correctly, assist with the deployment and recovery of scientific instruments, and assist with all issues related to IT. Their technical expertise and problem-solving skills are vital, enabling our research to proceed smoothly and effectively.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Beyond the specific roles above, the entire crew contributes to the success of our expedition. From deckhands to engineers, each member brings their unique skills and unwavering dedication to the table everyday. They work around the clock, often under challenging conditions, to ensure that the vessel operates smoothly and our mission stays on course.

To the crew aboard the Sikuliaq--thank you. Your hard work, expertise, and dedication are the foundation upon which our scientific endeavors stand. You are the unsung heroes of our expedition, and we are deeply grateful for your contributions. As we continue our journey across the vast ocean, let us remember that it's not just the science that drives us, but the incredible team that supports and sustains us.

Cheers to the crew of the R/V Sikuliaq! 🙌
