Day 2: Alaska 2024 GNSS-A Deployment - Ready to Launch

After another hearty breakfast, Watch Group 2 gathered to observe the deployments of the second and third KOD1 transponders, waiting attentively for the float pack to resurface from its journey to the ocean floor after each deployment.

The science crew commemorated the success of the first complete triad site deployment of the expedition with a group photo on the aftdeck.

The group photo was followed by a science meeting in which Dr. Andy Newman gave an overview of the seafloor geodetic instrument pool (SGIP) as well as the long-term goals and broader impacts of this research expedition. More presentations from PIs, engineers, and graduate students will follow during the remainder of the expedition, so stay tuned!

Working through some minor electronic issues this morning, the amazing crew of the Sikuliaq were able to deploy the CTD sensor into the ocean. The conductivity-temperature-depth data collected by this sensor allow us to derive a sound speed profile of the water column in the region of the transponder.

We were welcomed to the Mess Hall tonight by the sight of a magnificent feast--Kobe beef steaks with chimichurri sauce, asparagus, and roasted potatoes. To say that the Sikuliaq treats its passengers well is an understatement.

A snapshot of just one of our many delicious meals on the R/V Sikuliaq. Big thanks to the Galley staff!

Passing time on the 10 hour transit to the next deployment site, Watch Group 2 enjoyed a game of ping pong before settling back into the next couple hours of work.

Until next time, Watch Group 2 signing off.
